After 1 hour’s continuous usage the UV irradiance levels drop by 30% from 38.75 W/m2 to 27.12 W/m2 . Therefore the exposure time would need to be increased to 1.84 seconds for a 99% reduction and 8.11 seconds for a 99.9999% reduction. UV-C Germicidal light – What makes it effective? UV-C light is a high-energy form of ultraviolet light commonly used in controlled disinfection systems. Many UV-C devices operate at 253.7nm, a wavelength widely associated with germicidal properties. At the right dose, UV-C damages the DNA or RNA of microorganisms, rendering them unable to reproduce.
For UV-C sanitising to work properly, these factors matter:
- Size and lamp wattage: Hundreds of imported small hand-held, battery-operated UV wands are widely available on the market through retail platforms. Many have been flagged as being unsafe by the EU Directive, have no validity reports and come without any safety warnings.
- The wattage of these lamps ranges from 2W to 4W, and they are extremely small in size (some have approx. 2 inches of exposed lamp), but claim to kill all germs within 10 to 20 seconds. With these lamp wattages, one would have to hold the wand over the desired area for 2/3 days to achieve what the manufacturers claim.
- The higher the wattage of the lamp, the greater the kill rate and the exposure time is vastly reduced.
- Distance: The closer the lamp is held to the surface or item, the stronger the UV-C exposure, but again, this depends on the lamp wattage and the UV-C output.
- Line of sight: UV-C only works where the light reaches. Shadows, dust and cracks will reduce sanitisation, contrary to what some sellers of UV-C products are advertising.
- Light travels in a straight line and will not bend or twist to reach shadowed areas or remove debris.
UV-C works by direct exposure. Therefore, for best results, it is important to remove any dust, dirt, grease or grime before using the UV-C Miracle Wand (UV-C Hand-Held Sanitiser®). Hold the Wand approximately 1 inch (or as close to the surface without touching it) and move it slowly and evenly over the target area or item to be sanitised.

Caution / Safety:
UV-C light is very different to UV-A and UV-B in the light spectrum. The ‘C’ band is the Germicidal wavelength that is produced naturally by the sun and neutralises dangerous elements in the atmosphere before they reach the Earth. The ‘C’ band that is reproduced by man and incorporated into sanitising products goes back to the late 1800’s; so it is not a new technology that was discovered during the COVID pandemic. The UV-C lamps used in products for sanitisation and water purification can be damaging to humans and animals.
